Abstract	The current market-oriented reform of Japan's higher education coincides with the introduction of market-oriented programs in career education throughout the sector. The directive issued in 2015 by the Minister of Education effectively calling for the social sciences and humanities to be removed from state-funded higher education provoked a public discussion of the meaning of higher education in which the emergence of the neologisms black enterprise and black Job occasioned the public to rethink the remit of career education beyond the mere promotion of resilience, showing widespread support for a broadened remit which also encourages resistance to exploitative employment.
