Abstract	Examined recognition and approach responses to threatening objects using the Recognition and Behavioral Approach Task (RaBAT). Previous research suggests that positive stimuli are often approached as well as recognized faster than negative stimuli. However, this effect may not hold if negative stimuli are associated with threat. 56 subjects (mean age 18 years) performed a response time task with photos of spiders, butterflies, and stars. Approach movement and recognition times were measured within the same task. Results showed that individuals recognize threatening pictures faster than positive pictures, but approach the threatening pictures more slowly. In line with the fear module theory, it is argued that individuals recognize threatening stimuli faster than positive stimuli because of a constant monitoring of the environment for threatening objects. Results are also supported by the theory that motivation forms the base of approach-avoidance responses, as recognition may evoke a careful and slow approach to threatening objects. (ZPID).
