The chronological sequence of problem solving processes can be characterized by phase models. Though, most of these models present normative guidelines for ideal processes and it remains unclear whether they are also suitable to describe empirical processes - a fact that is especially true for problem solving in schools. After systematically comparing models from the literature, an exploratory study is conducted to examine elements of these models with regard to their suitability of describing processes. For this, the processes of fifth graders that solved problems in pairs within the MALU study in Hanover are used. A descriptive phase model is developed that is then used to correlate the courses of the processes with the success of those attempts. Missing analysis and a lack of self-regulation are identified as factors that contribute to failures in problem solving. |
