Abstract | [This Chapter] provides a unique perspective on young peoples' use of Internet communities in Japan, discussing in particular the types of "techno-orientalism" that have been used by westerners to describe the Japanese context. Focusing in particular on current trends in mobile Internet usage, [the author] draws on ethnographic studies involving young people over the decade since 2001 in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, to investigate the diversity among young Japanese people and their experience of online communities in Asia.
