AbstractA teacher of English, history, and math for nine years, Taylor McDowell Mali put his teaching career on hold in 2000 to pursue his calling as a writer and performer of slam poetry, which can be defined as the oral performance of an original lyrical work before a live audience. The slam poems chosen here reflect on education, teaching and learning in different ways. "What teachers make" is perhaps Mali's most famous poem and it invites teachers and students alike to share their opinion on what good education and learning experiences should look like as well as on the responsibility teachers and students have for creating both. The poem "Totally Whatever, You Know?" adresses the topic of meaningful education or rather the consequences of a lack thereof from a different angle. It pictures a generation of blind followers rather than leaders, of passive consumers rather than active and free agents. As such, it is a passionate wake-up call. (Verlag, adapt.).
