Abstract | While education has long contributed to national prosperity and stable families and communities, it is more critical than ever in the face of growing economic, social, and political challenges. To prepare young people to address these challenges, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration - often referred to as "21 century skills" or "deeper learning". This book clarifies the meaning of these terms, defining "deeper learning" as a process that allows a person to take knowledge and skills learned in one situation and apply them to new situations. The product of deeper learning is a blend of transferable knowledge and skills referred to as "21st century competencies." Without engaging in deeper learning and developing 21st century competencies, students cannot truly master content in a subject area. This report identifies teaching approaches that help students develop these competencies and explains how they are developed in the key disciplines of reading, mathematics, and science. It recommends systemwide changes - in teacher education, curricula, and assessment - to help the nation's K-12 students develop these transferable skills and knowledge. (DIPF/Orig.). |
