Abstract	"Since decades in Western countries, member states of the EU, and particularly in Germany a public debate is underway on the relationship of state and religion. This debate is paralleled by a scholarly discussion in political philosophy: Communitarian scholars argue that religion is one of the most important sources of moral norms and values which must be shared by all members of society. They conclude that the state must support religion in order to enforce those moral norms and values which religion provides. On the other hand, liberal and libertarian scholars claim that state and its authorities must remain neutral with regard to moral norms and values and therefore must not support any religion. In the following text communitarianism is contrasted to liberalism and libertarianism. It attempts to show that communitarian claims necessarily produce theoretical inconsistencies and would, if realized, cause harm for individuals which may endanger the freedom of society."
