AbstractThe realization of values is considered to be the most important supposition of successful personality development. The school becomes an important institution, concentrating on the fundamentals of science, but not taking the opportunity of developing moral values. The article analyzes the dissertation "The expression and development of adolescents' moral values on the basis of the Olympic education" of Asta Budreikaite. The novelty of this scientific work lies in the fact that comprehensive theoretical and empirical research has been performed and it is considered to be a contribution to Lithuanian science of education. The research revealed the possibilities of adolescents' moral value development based on values and notions of Olympic education, which have not only pedagogical but also a social meaning. A theoretical-empirical model of adolescents' moral value development based on Olympic education has been developed, that includes these levels: cognitive (expressed through the acknowledgment of the importance of moral values and perception of their significance); emotional (stability when experiencing personal emotions in relationship with oneself and other individuals (friends, PE teacher, members of the team, the competitors)); behavioural (the consecutive ability to analyze and assess the behaviour in a certain sporting situation, the potency to apply moral decisions). The effectiveness of this model has been examined empirically. Factors influencing the expression of adolescents' moral values have been examined in three aspects: according to gender, age (pupils of 5th and 6th forms) and physical activity (pupils participating and not participating in sporting activities). Essential statistically significant differences reveal that the girls value responsibility most out of instrumental values while the boys prefer diligence, adolescents not participating in sporting activities - responsibility and diligence. Yet leadership, courage and persistency are considered to be the least important values. The perception of moral values of the 6th graders is deeper than that of 5th graders. It signifies that the depth of adolescents' perception of significance of moral values is only influenced on the aspect of age. Boys participating in sports often feel joy towards their sporting life and admire their own achievements and trust their friend in competition, while the girls often experience the sense of guilt after their team has lost. Thus boys experience positive emotions in connection with oneself and a friend more often, and girls experience the negative ones more often. It should be noticed that only the gender and the physical activity (adolescents participating and not participating in sports) had statistically significant influence on the stability of emotional experiences. In order to achieve the objectives and aims of pedagogical experiment programme, these strategies have been developed and empirically tested: (1) of the explanation of values; (2) of the perception of the meaning of values; (3) of the integration of Olympic values to the content of moral education; (4) of the integration of moral values to the formal and non-formal physical education activity; (5) of the evaluation and self-evaluation of moral values' behaviour expression. The application of these strategies has helped the adolescents to deepen the meaning of moral values, evoked positive emotions when evaluating, self-evaluating and reflecting on the behaviour of oneself and others. It also has encouraged them to participate in sporting and other activities (projects, sporting events), while seeking to behave according to the Olympic ideals and values.
